Sheep at Burning Man

Alas I will not physically attend Burning Man this year. The sheep however will be my proxy: they will be in the mix projected onto the Cathedral's rose window at night. Best time to check it out will be Friday before the burn for an all-night dance celebration.

What happened? I was going to go... but a combination of factors has conspired to keep me in SF: getting evicted, laptop died, and exciting gigs in the queue... more on those later. For now, i gotta get wifi working on this X40 in Linux. yea.

I will be offline (no email, no phone, no blog, no shepherding) for the next week, on vacation with my family on a lake in the Cascades (east of Seattle).

Sheep Seed Thing

Dean wrote the Sheep Seed Thing to allow any server to contribute bandwidth to the distribution of sheep. It's running on ethereal which already donates a lot of bandwidth to the sheep project. It's packaged as a unix daemon with an "rc start/stop" style interface, so you can run it from cron totally automatically. It reads the RSS feed and downloads all torrents with the python bittorrent client. It also depends on wget but not on any perl modules. You will need to customize this code... Feedback welcome. You can email dean directly, or comment below.

I think with a few hacks you should also be able to run this to fetch sheep for your client if you have linux, instead of running azureus.
