Sheep available by manual BitTorrent
The sheep server is now generating and seeding torrents of sheep.
Hopefully this will soon be integrated into the clients.
In the meantime you can download them manually by
installing
BitTorrent and
then picking a torrent from the list at the bottom of the server
status page.
Update: RSS feed.
Note: after you've downloaded them you have to put the mpg files into your cache directory.
The client does not search subdirectories of the cache directory, so just putting them under
the cache doesn't work. Yes of course an updated client that does all this automatically is coming soon.

Just downloaded a torrent from the server page. Have MPEG2 files, how do I get the screen saver to load em?

I believe you just put them into your sheep Cache directory.
Under Windows XP, this is C:\Windows\System32\ElectricSheep-cache\
And what about a lot of recent and old sheeps shared on DC hub? I can't download them cause I even don't know how to conntact to people having ones.
Is any plans of page/forum for sharing torrents of archives?
that is a good idea!!! and a very legal way to give use to such tech. mostly if the electricsheep client starts to understand BT :D

Bit torrenting is a great idea, but I can't get it to work. Whenever I put my new downloaded flock into the electricsheep-cache directory it deletes them when I run the program. Any ideas?

Just as and addendum to my last post. I was placing the downloaded sheep into the mpeg file folder in the system cache. I've put them in the super folder, electricsheep-cache, but that doesn't seem to be incorporating them either, dunno what to do. Am running a PC. Thankers

in the
desktop properties
screen-saver tab, click
setup and edit configuration
to increase the cache size.
try 5000.
taylor's problem is when the bittorrent client creates a folder with the torrent number... he places it on the electricsheep-cache folder and from there it is probably creating the folders 124, 125, 126 with the released mpegs, instead of going inside electricsheep-cache/mpeg folder.
Taylor: you have to ignore the folder presented by the BT client as the default for this torrents and place the files in the correct folder so the electricsheep can read those files or somehow do that by hand.
How do I use the RSS to get Azureus to auto download new torrents and start them downloading?
As Ricardo says, you open the downloaded, numbered Bittorrent folders, then you copy all of the files INSIDE those numbered folders then paste them to the mpeg FOLDER within the Windows\System32\Electric Sheep\mpeg. This will create many mpeg files inside of the Electric Sheep\mpeg folder and they will all work automatically after that. However, if you download a lot of them that will defeat the possiblity of chosing which ones you want to download using the up and down arrows because you will already have them. Have fun.
I backed up my cache folder before reformatting and installing the program again. when i copy the MPEG files into the MPEG folder and try to run the screen saver, it deletes them all. is there some way to fix this?

Yea, I've downloaded the sheep pack and tried the above methods, but it keeps deleting the files. I've put the files in the cache folder and also the mpeg folder. Then when I do the preview screen saver thing, it deletes them. Any help?
Same thing happens to me. When I put them in the cache folder, they're deleted. Any work around? I think it has to do with the list.xml file in the xml folder.
I was actually working on adding BitTorrent support to the Electric Sheep client, but if this is already being worked on, I won't worry about it. I have a lot of other stuff to work on anyway.
As a suggestion, each sheep should be in a separate torrent, and the client should scrape all the sheep that it currently has in its cache to see which is in the most "danger" and automatically seed on that one. And of course maximum bandwidth rates and maximum connections should be configurable. Configurable IP type-of-service (TOS) for torrent traffic would also be much appreciated.
Make sure you can change the port number bit torrent uses, otherwise many of us might not be able to get through filtering.

Is it possible to stop the cache from being deleted? I had close to 4GB i downloaded manually and now it is 300MB...it all just disappeared....is there a way to keep what you have?

@ dirk: you can find Azureus on Sourceforge. just search on www.sourceforge.net for "bittorrent" and you'll likely stumble across Azureus as one of the results.

I'm happy this is now torrented. My HD ended up suffering massive issues and I lost pretty much all my sheeps :(
So, it's good to see them here, but hopefully, like someone mentioned, the older sheeps will be torrented at some point as well.

Is the seeder in super seeder mode?
It looks like a complete image of the torrent doesn't get out fast enough.
If someone can come up with a way to share the old torrents, I've got almost all of them in this generation. I've got a hold in the data from 978-1183, but I do have the torrent .tor files
I do seed single seed torrents from 2800+ when I see them. The problem is, where do you get the old torrent files if you need them?

After I download a package from Bittorent, does it matter if I copy all the files and put them all together in Windows\System32\Electric Sheep\mpeg, or should I keep them in the folders and just copy the folders to Windows\System32\Electric Sheep\mpeg, as another sub directories?
