Some time ago I heard that the remake of the movie Solaris used the flame algorithm for the planetary surface. I also heard someone say they read an interview with the person who did it, and that it was custom software. Well the mystery is resolved. I disocvered that someone I have corresponded with for some time, one Richard "dr." Baily is in fact that creator of the Solaris effects, and though it was done with his Spore system, it is in fact quite similar to the flame system, and he has been using and making fractal flames for some time.
