Speaking at World Science Festival

The World Science Festival was founded by Brian Greene to spark the public's interest in science. In his NYTimes Op-ed he writes:
I’ve spoken with so many people over the years whose encounters with science in school left them thinking of it as cold, distant and intimidating. ... We must embark on a cultural shift that places science in its rightful place alongside music, art and literature as an indispensable part of what makes life worth living.
This is remarkably similar to one of my objectives with the Electric Sheep, which is to provide an alternative to the conception of the machine as binary, hard, and mechanical. The Sheep show that the machine can be soft and subtle, like us. They show that math can be beautiful. The Electric Sheep don't just put science alongside art, but merge them, just like they merge man and machine.

So although I got into the game really late, as soon as I heard about the festival, I volunteered to contribute. Here's a gallery of the result: me speaking for a family audience. I have always known that kids liked the Electric Sheep but I don't have much experience presenting it to them, especially in a formal environment like this. Fortunately we had plenty of time and it went over quite well. Thanks to the organizers for inviting me to be part of the event, and to the kids for their enthusiasm and for sitting still for a really long time :).

FLAM3 2.7.13 released

Download FLAM3 v2.7.13 here. This is just a quick bug-fix release, version 2.7.12 inadvertently made some images come out darker than before. The upper limit on particle coordinates has been restored.

Need Mac Developer

The Electric Sheep are seeking a Mac developer. Version 2.7 is fast approaching on Linux, and Windows is not far behind. But nobody is working on the Mac version, so we're looking for an C++/Objective-C hacker. After the 2.7 server leaves beta, the 2.6 server will be shut down and Mac users will be cut off unless someone picks up the client.

The code is GPL, and you will be linked from the credit page. This is a great opportunity for an intern or student to learn from a master, as part of a world-wide team on a high-profile project. To apply, email me your resume or a link to an online portfolio of your work.

Thanks, and good luck!

Gaian Mind in June

On the East Coast there's one summer festival that's legendary for good vibes: Gaian Mind. I am pleased to announce that this year I'll be performing as a VJ on the main stage, and bringing the Electric Sheep's Dreams in High Fidelity as an installation for the downtempo stage. This is a multi-day outdoor camp-out in central Pennsylvania, my home state. I have a feeling about this one. The music headliners are amazing:

RASTALIENS, BRAINCELL, E.V.P, REALITYGRID, DIGITALIST, TREAVOR MOONTRIBE, AES DANA, SOLAR FIELDS, H.U.V.A. NETWORK, MAHIANE.

Tickets: Advanced - $110 (April 14th – June 8th), Gate - $145* (June 18th – June 22nd).
