Spidrons

Spidrons are polygonal spirals that fit together and fold up in intricate and beautiful ways. Science News has a story explaining their construction and their history back to a Budapest printing house. Oh but where are the animations? Interactive software?

thanks Mark L.

Piksel and Fjord

I was honored to attend Piksel, an annual conference devoted to hacking, software, pixels, and art. It runs for most of a week in Bergen on the west coast of Norway. The conference includes technical presentations, an art exhibition, audiovisual performances, and lots of drinking and smoking. Afterwards I took a day-trip out to see the famous fjords.

The gallery.

Volumetric Fractal rendered on Sun Grid

Don Casteel has implemented a volumetric fractal IFS renderer that runs on Sun's Grid Compute Utility. Resolution was 128x128x128 voxels, then ray traced at 480x360 pixels and one ray per pixel. It took 13 CPU hours, 3 real-time to render.

This isn't the first 3D IFS program (i did one in 1990) and certainly not the prettiest (see XenoDream and Chaoscope) but as far as i know it is the first to handle transparency and occlusion. Congratulations Don, very promising work!

Update: Don has made another, better animation with his software, see it here.
